2 Year Old Stakes Watch- Maid of the Mist

Maid of the Mist at Belmont

Maid of theMist IFollowing the Sleepy Hollow Stakes on Saturday, October 18th, we have the $250,000 Maid of the Mist Stakes at Belmont in race 3. This one mile race will feature 9 two year old fillies that were foaled in New York and approved by the New York State-Bred Registry. Although name has an eerie feel to it alongside the Sleepy Hollow Stakes, the Maid of the Mist is actually in reference to the boat tours that highlight Niagara Falls along the Niagara River. These tours have been around since 1846 and although there are several boats used in this service, they all share the name Maid of the Mist. Although the name implies what I can only assume would be a very wet ride along Niagara Falls, the Maid of the Mist Stakes on Saturday looks to be a dry and sunny ride for the nine entered here with no rain in site. Let’s see what kind of value we can find!

Belmont’s Maid of the Mist

Temper Mint PattyThe 8/5 morning line favorite is Temper Mint Patty, which I have to say has just become one of my favorite names, lol. Temper Mint Patty is undefeated in her only 2 starts, winning her last outing in the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes by 13 lengths in the mud. Trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., Patty does look the best in this field and she will be the one to beat. What I like best about her (other than her name) is the fact that she has shown some real versatility in her running style in those two outings, nabbing the win in stalking fashion. To find one to beat her here will be tough and we have to hope that the muddy surface helped her in that last race and that she gets sucked up into the speed duel. Many of the entries here love the early lead, so if Temper Mint Patty gets caught up in that then we have the potential to land a whale. So for the sake of going out there strong, I have two longshot plays for the Maid of the Mist. My first choice is Dunn Listening at 15 to 1 on the ML. She ran 5th in her last outing in the New York Breeders’ Futurity at Finger Lakes, but in her defense, she was in mixed company. In the race before that one, Dunn Listening won the Lady Fingers Stakes by a head in a straight come from the clouds style which would be useful here. For my other longshot, I like Lady Bling at 20 to 1 on the morning line. Distance should not be an issue since she has went 1 1/16 of a mile in her only 2 outings. Both of those races were on the turf, so her move to dirt offers her a great shot at improvement. She is also the only filly entered that has some graded stakes experience, although she ran 8th in that race. Having John Velazquez in the irons should help her and she may very well pull off the upset. Good luck everyone!
