2013 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile- Race 8

VerrazanoThe 2013 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile will be Race 8 on the card at Santa Anita on Friday and is for 3 year olds and up looking to travel 1 mile.First off, its important to note that Graydar would have been the favorite here, but had to drop from the race due to injury. The big talk then became the battle between Verrazano and Goldencents. Verrazano is the favorite at 3 to 1 on the morning line while Goldencents is a close 4 to 1 for second choice. These are the 2 speed horses that everyone was looking at during Derby time, but both horses disappointed in that race. It has been announced that the Dirt Mile will be Verrazano’s last race before retiring to stud. As far as the history of the Dirt Mile, these 2 have a couple of disadvantages. Since its debut in 2007, only one 3 year old has won this race and that was Caleb’s Posse in 2011. In the last 5 runnings of this event, the favorite has run out of the money. The last 4 winners of the Dirt Mile have been longshots, including last year’s winner, Tapizar.  In 2011, Tapizar ran 5th as a 3 year old but returned in 2012 and won at 15-1 odds. This is a full field of talented horses including Pants On Fire, Alpha and Fed Biz (just to name a few) and determining a pace set-up will be difficult, to say the least! Taptowne and Easter Gift have scratched. The average winning pay-out in the history of this event is $32.37 based on a $2 wager. Listed below are our picks (listed in predicted order of finish) for the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Good luck!
