2013 Claiming Crown Jewel with Pick 8!

Claiming Crown Day at Gulfstream

Voodoo StormSaturday, December 7th is Claiming Crown Day at Gulfstream Park. The Claiming Crown honors the claiming horses that are the very foundation of thoroughbred racing programs throughout the country. This will be the second year in a row that the event is being held at Gulfstream Park and will be the first major event for Gulfstream’s 2013-2014 Champion’s Meet. This event will be made up of 8 races that will also be a part of a 10-cent Ultimate 8 multi-race wager with a guaranteed minimum pool of $100,000. TOBA president, Dan Metzger had this to say about the importance of the Claiming Crown-

“The goals of the Claiming Crown remain unchanged since its inception in 1999 at Canterbury Park.  We have always wanted to demonstrate our support to the owners of the claiming horses, who are the backbone of our industry.  The support for the Claiming Crown by horsemen over the years has elevated the event to a higher level and we could not be more excited about the future.”

Here at HandicapHorseRacing we will cover the Claiming Crown Jewel (Race 10 on the card), as well as give our top selections for the 10-cent Ultimate 8. Let’s start off with our assessment of the 2013 Claiming Crown Jewel.

Claiming Crown Jewel

Bernie the MaestroThe $200,000 Claiming Crown Jewel is the 10th race on the card at Gulfstream Park on Saturday and will be the highlight event for the Claiming Crown. This race will host a field of 10 horses 3 years old and up which have started for a claiming price of $35,000 or less since January 1st, 2012. These entries will travel 1 1/8 mile for this race. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Bernie the Maestro. Bernie the Maestro has won 5 of his 9 starts this year including wins at Gulfstream, Keeneland, Churchill, Saratoga and Indiana Downs. He has shown some pretty impressive speed figures and should do well here. Looking to give him some trouble is Voodoo Storm at 3 to 1 on the ML. Voodoo Storm recently won the Mountaineer Mile at Mountaineer by 7 ¾ lengths and picked up a speed figure there that towers over this field. It was a muddy track for that day, though and could have played a factor in the win. I have 2 value plays in this one, though that could give the top 2 contenders a bit of trouble. The first is Dominant Jeannes at 6 to 1 on the morning line. The other is Nevada Kid at 5 to 1. Both of these horses have been this distance and at comparable speed figures. I’m leaning more towards Nevada Kid, but I look for both of these horses to be up in the mix. Good luck everybody!
