2013 Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes

Grade 3 Delta Jackpot

2013 Delta Downs JackpotThe $1,000,000 Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot is the featured race this Saturday at Delta Downs and it is the 7th race on the card. The Delta Jackpot is a great race in that it generally provides us with some Kentucky Derby contenders as well as future greats in the makings. Last year, Goldencents won by 1 ¾ lengths over favorite, Bern Identity and went on to capture the Grade 3 Sham Stakes and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby before his 17th place finish in the Kentucky Derby. Of course, as you already know, Goldencents went on to win this year’s Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and has his sights on this year’s Cigar Mile. The Delta Downs Jackpot also produced 3rd place Mylute and 6th place Itsmyluckyday. Both horses ran in the Derby, as well as running well in the Preakness with Itsmyluckyday running 2nd and Mylute 3rd. The Delta Downs Jackpot is also a points race for the 2014 Kentucky Derby. For more info on this year’s Kentucky Derby points system see 2014 Kentucky Derby Points System. Let’s see how this year’s edition should pan out.

$1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot

Rise UpAs stated earlier, the $1,000,000 Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes is the 7th race Saturday and will feature a field of 10 two year olds traveling 1 1/16 mile. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Coastline. Coastline recently won the Street Sense at Churchill Downs by 3 lengths and is undefeated in his last two starts. This is his first attempt at two turns, but his inside rail position and the distance he’ll need to adjust for that first turn is in his advantage. Looking to give him trouble is Rise Up at 3 to 1 on the ML. Rise Up recently won the Jean Lafitte Stakes at Delta which is considered a prep race for the Jackpot. He won it by 6 ½ lengths, drawing away and his works look great going into this race. I believe both of these horses will be up in the mix, but I have 2 value/longshot plays that I think are set to pounce here. The first is Big Bazinga at 12/1 on the morning line. Big Bazinga ran 2nd in the Grade 3 Grey at Woodbine in October, but lost ground from stretch to finish and was passed up by Ami’s Holiday. RankhasprivilegesRosie Napravnik gets the mount here and this will work in his advantage. Big Bazinga has shown that he is capable of front running or coming from way back and this is a trait that can be useful in this race as well as in the future. The front end in this race should be battled out between Coastline and Rise Up, so if he can sit off of the pace or run from way back, Big Bazinga will do well here and quite possibly upset this field. Another late runner who has the potential of shaking this race up a bit is Rankhasprivileges. Rankhasprivileges only has one race under his belt, but it was a come-from-behind victory at Keeneland at this distance and he won by 1 ¼ lengths, gaining ground from 1st call to finish. At 15 to 1 on the morning line, Rankhasprivileges could pay well for this upset and looks good enough to do it. He’ll be receiving first time Lasix, as well. Look for both of these late-comers and an exciting finish that could pay big! Good luck everyone!
