2014 Barbara Fritchie Handicap

Barbara Fritchie at Laurel

My Wandy's GirlLet’s preview the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap for fillies and mares three year olds and up going a distance of seven furlongs with a purse of $300,000. The morning line favorite is Linda Rice’s La Verdad. This one is stepping out of the claiming ranks and tries stakes company for the very first time. Rice is shipping in here from New York where she certainly commands respect. This four year old filly has won five in a row in easy fashion, so it is no wonder that Rice wanted to test the waters here at Laurel in a graded stakes event. She will be ridden by regular rider Jose Ortiz. Second in the ML is Martin Wolfson’s Centrique. She has shipped up from Gulfstream Park where she won two races in a row, but they weren’t graded stakes. She likes to be close to the early leaders  and will be ridden by Edgard Zayas. Picked third by the morning line is Michael Hushion’s My Wandy’s Girl. She finished second in two Grade 2’s at Aqueduct and Laurel last year and in 2012 she finished third in a Grade 1 at Aqueduct. My concern here is her racing pattern. She raced February, April and December of 2013. That indicates to me that she has a problem after racing and that it takes some time to get over it. She will be ridden today by Rajiv Maragh. Despite my concerns about My Wandy’s Gal, I am picking her to win with La Verdad second and Centrique third. Happy Handicapping gals and guys!
