2014 Breeders’ Cup- Friday, October 31st

Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Races

BC-Classic2013It’s Hallows Eve, racing fans, but more important than the ghouls and ghosts that will be begging for candy on your doorstep this Halloween are the 4 Breeders’ Cup events on Friday afternoon! Some of these entries will look to “trick” us, while others will hopefully give us some high return “treats”! This year’s Breeders’ Cup event is being held at Santa Anita (again) and it all begins Friday in the 6th race with the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, followed by the BC Dirt Mile, the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf and finally wraps up with the BC Longines Distaff. Last year we cranked out one article for every race in the Breeders’ Cup and I have to tell you… it was an ordeal! This year we are approaching it a little bit differently, by giving you Friday’s races all in one post. For Saturday’s races, Mike Jr. will give you a quick break down of all 9 races in one post and Mike Sr. will give you his take on this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic. But, just like our coverage last year, we will have the Father/Son show down at the end of each post with a chart highlighting both Mike Sr. and Mike Jr.’s top 3 picks for each race. Just to give you an idea of how last year’s showdown went, we both picked our top 3 choices for each race. In all honesty, we didn’t do as well as we had hoped and were both heartbroken in the Classic when Mucho Macho Man won by a nose hair over Will Take Charge. In the end, Mike Sr. had 3 wins, 7 places and 1 show while Mike Jr. had 4 wins, 4 places and 5 shows. At any rate, it was a lot of fun and we’re hoping to see much better results this year. Let’s get started!

2014 BC Juvenile Turf

HootenannyThe $1,000,000 Grade 1 BC Juvenile Turf will be the 6th race on the card Friday. This race has a field of 14 colts and geldings (with 2 also eligible) set to travel 1 mile on the turf. The 3 to 1 morning line favorite is Hootenanny. Hootenanny has been abroad in his last two outings, but returns to the States here for his shot at a Breeders’ Cup win. Although the ML favorite, this will be Hootenanny’s first time around 2 turns. Next on the morning line is foreigner, War Envoy at 9/2. War Envoy has shown some strong efforts overseas and comes into this race with first time Lasix. Other notable entries in this race are Imperia (6 to 1), Luck of the Kitten (8 to 1), Startup Nation (12 to 1), Conquest Typhoon (12 to 1) and Lawn Ranger (20 to 1).

2014 BC Dirt Mile

GoldencentsThe $1,000,000 Grade 1 BC Dirt Mile will be the 7th race on the card Friday. This race has a field of 10 three year olds and up traveling one mile. The 6/5 morning line favorite is Goldencents. Goldencents nailed this race last year from the outside post, but may have some trouble here with the 1 post unless he can get out quickly. If he were to win the BC Dirt Mile he would be the first 2 time victor in the race’s seven year history. Next on the ML is Fed Biz at 7 to 2. He has beaten Goldencents in the past back in August of 2013, but ran 6th in this event last year. Other notable entries here are Pants On Fire (6 to 1), Tapiture (6 to 1) , Vicar’s In Trouble (12 to 1), and last year’s second place finisher, Golden Ticket (15 to 1).

2014 BC Juvenile Fillies Turf

Sunset GlowThe $1,000,000 Grade 1 BC Juvenile Fillies Turf will be the 8th race on the card Friday. This race has a field of 14 two year old fillies (with 2 also eligible) traveling one mile on the turf. The 7 to 2 morning line favorite is Sunset Glow with Victor Espinoza up. Sunset Glow recently won the Grade 1 Del Mar Derby and will be making her first attempt at the one mile distance. Chasing her on the morning line are two foreign invaders, Osaila and Qualify, both at 5 to 1. Other notable entries here are Lady Eli (6 to 1), Conquest Harlanate (10 to 1) and Sivoliere (12 to 1) who will have Gary Stevens in the irons. I like Stevens, but I have to question his ability to perform here after knee replacement surgery only 14 weeks ago. He is a champion, though and has proven in the past that he can do the impossible, so we’ll just have to wait and see!

2014 BC Longines Distaff

UntapableThe $2,000,000 Grade 1 BC Longines Distaff will be the 9th race on the card Friday. This race has a field of 11 fillies and mares three years old and up looking to travel 1 1/8 mile. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Untapable at 5/2 with Rosie Napravnik on board. Untapable has been a true sensation with this year’s crop of 3 year olds, so the world will be watching to see how she fares this year in the Breeders’ Cup. Close on her hooves on the ML at 3 to 1 is Close Hatches. She ran 2nd in last year’s Distaff and looks for a shot of redemption here. Other notable entries include Don’t Tell Sophia (5 to 1), Iotapa (6 to 1), Tiz Midnight (10 to 1), and Ria Antonia (15 to 1). This is sure to be the highlight of the day and will only serve to get us primed for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup action! You can see our write up and picks for Saturday here- 2014 Breeders’ Cup- Saturday, November 1st. You can also catch Mike Sr.’s write up for the Classic here- 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Good luck everybody!
