Breeders-Cup-Experiences-Breeders-Cup-Logo-2014It’s Day 2 of the 2014 Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita Park and this marks the 2nd post in our Breeders’ Cup coverage. You can catch the quick write-up and the father/son showdown picks for Friday’s races here- 2014 Breeders’ Cup- Friday, October 31st. In this article we’ll continue that same theme, but cover all of the BC races for Saturday. If you want Mike Sr.’s breakdown and thoughts on this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, you can find that here- 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic. There are 9 Breeders’ Cup races scheduled for Saturday’s card, starting with the Juvenile Fillies in Race 4 and carrying on through to the Classic in Race 12. We’ll do a quick overview of each race here followed by our father/son showdown selections, highlighting both Mike Sr. and Mike Jr.’s top 3 picks for each race. Let’s get started!

2014 BC Juvenile Fillies

Angela ReneeThe $2,000,000 Grade 1 BC Juvenile Fillies will be the 4th race on the card Saturday. This race has a field of 12 two year old fillies set to travel 1 1/16 mile. The 3 to 1 morning line favorite is Angela Renee. Angela Renee recently won the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes by 1 ½ lengths at Santa Anita. Next on the morning line is Conquest Eclipse at 4 to 1. Conquest Eclipse made a strong, late move at Angela Renee in the Chandelier earning her a second place finish. The added distance here may be in her favor. Other notable entries in this race are By the Moon (6 to 1), Puca (6 to 1), Christina’s Journey (6 to 1) and Feathered (8 to 1).

2014 BC Filly & Mare Turf

DankThe $2,000,000 Grade 1 BC Filly & Mare Turf will be the 5th race on the card Saturday. This race has a field of 11 filly and mares 3 years old and up set to travel 1 1/4 mile on the turf. The 5/2 morning line favorite is foreign invader, Dank, who won this event last year by ½ of a length. Regular rider, Ryan Moore will be back in the saddle and looking for a repeat victory here. Next on the morning line is Stephanie’s Kitten at 3 to 1. Stephanie’s Kitten is coming out of a nice 1 ¼ length win in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont. She will have John Velazquez in the irons. Other notable entries here are Just the Judge (5 to 1), Secret Gesture (6 to 1), Dayatthespa (8 to 1), and Emollient (12 to 1).

2014 BC Filly & Mare Sprint

Judy the BeautyThe $1,000,000 Grade 1 BC Filly & Mare Sprint will be the 6th race on the card Saturday. This race has a field of 10 filly and mares 3 years old and up set to travel 7 furlongs. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Judy the Beauty who ran 2nd in this event last year. Since that race, she has won every outing save one, where she finished 4th in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff at Churchill. Next on the morning line is Artemis Agrotera at 3 to 1. Artemis Agrotera is undefeated in her last 3 starts, including wins in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap and the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes. Other notable entries in this field are Leigh Court (4 to 1), Sweet Reason (9 to 2), Stonetastic (8 to 1) and Thank You Marylou (20 to 1).

2014 BC Turf Sprint

No Nay NeverThe $1,000,000 Grade 1 BC Turf Sprint will be the 7th race on the card Saturday. This race has a field of 14 three year olds and up (with 2 also eligible) set to travel 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf. The 9 to 2 morning line favorite is No Nay Never. No Nay Never recently won the Grade 3 Woodford at Keeneland by ½ of a length. Interestingly enough, Mike Smith was No Nay Never’s rider in the Woodford, but will be on Ambitious Brew in this race. Next on the morning line is Reneesgotzip at 5 to 1. Reneesgotzip ran second in this race last year, missing the win by ½ of a length and dead heating with Tightend Touchdown (who is also entered here). Other notable entries in this race are Silentio (8 to 1), Undrafted (8 to 1), Bobby’s Kitten (10 to 1), and Casper Natscher (10 to 1).

2014 BC Juvenile

DaredevilThe $2,000,000 Grade 1 BC Juvenile will be the 8th race on the card Saturday. This race has a field of 13 two year old colts and geldings set to travel 1 1/16 mile. The morning line favorite at 2 to 1 would have been American Pharoah at 2 to 1, but due to a foot problem he has scratched from the race. That makes Daredevil the next choice on the ML at 7/2. Daredevil is undefeated in 2 starts and recently won the Grade Champagne at Belmont by 2 ½ lengths. What may be important to note about Daredevil’s wins are that they were both over sloppy, muddy tracks. Next on the ML is Carpe Diem at 4 to 1. Carpe Diem is also undefeated in 2 starts, including his most recent win in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland. Other notable entries here are Upstart (8 to 1), One Lucky Dane (10 to 1), The Great War (12 to 1) and Souper Colossal (12 to 1).

2014 BC Turf

FlintshireThe $3,000,000 Grade 1 BC Turf will be the 9th race on the card Saturday. This race has a field of 13 three year olds and up set to travel 1 1/2 mile on the turf. It’s important to note that last year’s winner, Magician, has scratched from this race due to a lame leg. The 7 to 2 morning line favorite is foreign invader, Flintshire. The 4 year old colt brings with him his regular jockey, Maxime Guyon. Next in the morning line is another foreign invader, Telescope at 4 to 1. Telescope will have the services of Ryan Moore. Other notable entries here are Main Sequence (6 to 1), Chicquita (8 to 1), Brown Panther (8 to 1), Imagining (12 to 1) and Twilight Eclipse (12 to 1).

2014 BC Sprint

Secret CircleThe $1,500,000 Grade 1 BC Sprint will be the 10th race on the card Saturday. This race has a field of 14 three year olds and up (with 2 also eligible) set to travel 6 furlongs. The morning line favorite is Secret Circle at 9/2. Secret Circle won this event last year by a neck with jockey, Martin Garcia in the irons and both look to defend their title here. Next in the morning line is Rich Tapestry at 5 to 1.  Rich Tapestry recently won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship by a nose and could be a real threat in this event. Other notable entries here are Private Zone (6 to 1), Palace (6 to 1), Salutos Amigos (6 to 1), and Bakken (10 to 1).

2014 BC Mile

ToranadoThe $2,000,000 Grade 1 BC Mile will be the 11th race on the card Saturday. This race has a field of 14 three year olds and up (with 1 also eligible) set to travel one mile. It’s very important to note that last year’s winner (as well as the winner of the year before), Wise Dan, will not be in this race due to injury. The morning line favorite at 5/2 is Toronado. This 4 year old colt has spent a lot of time winning in Great Britain and is looking to take advantage of Wise Dan’s absence. I can’t say that I don’t blame him! Next on the morning line are 3 entries all set at 6 to 1- Seek Again, Anodin and Mustajeeb.  Other notable entries in this field are Obviously (8 to 1), Karakontie (10 to 1), Tourist (12 to 1) and Trade Storm (12 to 1).

2014 BC Classic

Shared BeliefThe $5,000,000 Grade 1 BC Mile will be the 12th race on the card Saturday. This race has a field of 14 three year olds and up (with 1 also eligible) set to travel 1 1/4 mile. This is the big one folks! The 9/5 favorite is Shared Belief. Shared Belief is undefeated in 7 starts and is seeking Horse of the Year right here. Following him on the ML at 4 to 1 is this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, California Chrome. California Chrome had been on a 6 win streak when he was upset in the Belmont by Tonalist (another top notch entry in this field at 5 to 1). Chrome took some time off and returned in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby only to bounce, running 6th and losing to another top notch entry here, Bayern (6 to 1). This is going to be a beast of a race with other notable entries here like Toast of New York (12 to 1), V.E. Day (20 to 1), Moreno (20 to 1) and Candy Boy (20 to 1). Since Dad is writing an article about who he thinks will win this race, I’m using this spot to tell you my choices. TonalistI think that early speed runners will burn out in this one since there are just too many here who love the front end. I believe that some of the stalkers are going to get caught up in this speed war as well, including California Chrome and Shared Belief. I like both of these horses and I wish them both the best of luck, but I’m going with my ‘ol standby here- Tonalist. Tonalist came through for me in the Belmont (not to mention he was the icing on my $400 Pick 4 for that day!). I chose him then because he was showing a lot of front end speed when the rest of the entries had not. This time, I see where he has shown some real versatility and doesn’t have to have that early lead, but can make a commanding move from the backfield when it’s needed. It’ll be needed here for sure! For my back-up selections I’m going with Footbridge and Majestic Harbour. Good luck everybody!
