2014 Firecracker

Firecracker Stakes at Churchill

Silver MaxIt is now time to preview the Grade 2  Firecracker Stakes from Churchill Downs for three year olds and upward going 1 mile on the turf for a purse of $200,000. The morning line favorite is Dale Romans’ Silver Max with Robby Albarado in the irons. Silver Max may be somewhat rusty as he has not been out yet this year. When he is in top form he likes to go gate to wire, but I would be surprised if he pulls that off today. Second choice in the ML is Steve Asmussen’s Regally Ready with Shaun Bridgmohan up. He has won two straight here at Churchill and he, too likes it on the front end. He is a consistent sort, but has not been able to win a graded stakes in his last ten starts.

Nikki's SandcastleThird choice in the morning line is Charles LoPresti’s Villandry with Julien Leparoux as the pilot. He, too has visited the Optional Claiming ranks and shows no graded stakes wins in his past performances. He loves to make one run from behind. To be perfectly honest with you, I am not impressed with any of the three top morning line entries. As rusty as Silver Max is, he might be able to beat these but I am just not willing to concede that. I believe I’ll go with one that I picked last year in the grade 2 Fayette who won for me at 11 to one and that is Nikki’s Sandcastle. He is coming off a win in the Grade 3 Hanshin at Arlington Park. I believe Silver Max will be second and Guys Reward will get up for third. Happy Horse Pickin’ Girls and Guys!
