2014 San Felipe

San Felipe at Santa Anita

Pioneerof the NileOn Saturday, March 8th, 2014 we have the $300,000 Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita. The San Felipe Stakes is one of the Kentucky Derby Championship Series races that rewards the top 4 finishers with qualifying points towards this year’s Kentucky Derby. If you are unfamiliar with the Kentucky Derby Points System, you should check out our page dedicated to the system with the leaderboard, replays and breakdown of the points system- 2014 Kentucky Derby Points System. The San Felipe was inaugurated back in 1935 and has seen its fair share of talent along the way including Affirmed, Sunday Silence, Bertrando, Point Given and Pioneerof the Nile. Let’s take a look at this year’s edition and see what we can find.

San Felipe Stakes 2014

California ChromeThis year’s edition of the San Felipe will feature 9 three year olds traveling 1 1/16 mile and will be the 5th race on the card at Santa Anita on Saturday. The morning line favorite is California Chrome at 9/5. California Chrome recently won the California Cup Derby at Santa Anita by 5 ½ lengths and prior to that race dominated the field in the King Glorious at Hollywood Park by 6 ¼ lengths. He has 8 races under his belt so far and 4 of those he has won. He doesn’t, however, have any Derby points to date and will try to correct that problem here. He will be the one to beat here. Many are looking at the rematch between Midnight Hawk and Kristo (both at 5/2 on the ML) in this race, too. The two went head to head in a short field in the Grade 3 Sham back in January where Midnight Hawk won by 1 ¾ lengths. Kristo has not been out since then, but Midnight Hawk followed that race up with a 3rd place finish in the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis in early February, missing it by 1 ¾ lengths. I look for these 2 to fight for the lead early. Unstoppable Colby may be there with them early, too, but I’m not convinced that he’ll have the staying power (even though, I really like this horse). Because Midnight Hawk and Kristo will set out strong, I look for California Chrome to be right on their heels in stalking fashion. Because of this, I’m looking for value in another stalker or late-runner. For value, I’m considering Schoolofhardrocks at 9/2 on the morning line. My biggest concern for him is that he only has one race under his belt. He won that race by 1 ½ lengths for a mile at Del mar back in August. But he has trained like crazy since and his works look spot on for this race. For a longshot, I like Rprettyboyfloyd at 12/1. Good luck everybody!
