2014 Travers

Travers at Saratoga

TonalistIt is time to preview the 2014 Travers Stakes at Saratoga. The morning line favorite is Bob Baffert’s Bayern with Martin Garcia in the irons. Bayern is a speedy sort who has won two graded stakes in a row by going wire to wire in impressive style and winning by seven lengths in both races. The colt has improved by leaps and bounds since his third place finish in the Arkansas Derby. Second choice in the ML is the winner of the Grade 1 Belmont, Christopher Clement’s Tonalist with Joel Rosario in the saddle. This horse will probably give Bayern all the company he wants on the lead. He likes the front end but won the Belmont in a stalking style so he can do both. It will be interesting to see which strategy he will employ.

Wicked StrongThird choice in the morning line is James Jerkins’ Wicked Strong with Rajiv Maragh getting the call. This one likes to be a little further back in the pack, but can stalk the pace if necessary as he did in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy. He can lay back and let the pace get hot in front of him or lay closer and pounce if need be. He is a very versatile sort and he too has improved as of late. There are others in the race that should be mentioned like Commanding Curve, who stays back and comes running with a fury down the stretch,  Kid Cruz who won the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes and Mr Speaker who was victorious in the Belmont Derby at long odds.

BayernSo how do I see this shaping up? Well I believe the pace setter for sure will be the talented Bayern, but I don’t believe that Tonalist will let him get too far in front with an easy lead. That being said Bayern is quite possibly the most improved three year old in the country and he will be very tough to beat. I don’t usually pick the favorite, but in this case I believe you are going to see a colt that is on the muscle and will make a serious run for three year old of the year. I think Bayern will win it, with Wicked Strong second and Mr Speaker third. Happy Travers picking Guys and Gals!
