2015 Davona Dale

Gulfstream’s Davona Dale

BirdatthewireIt is time to preview the Grade 2 Davona Dale Stakes for three year old fillies going a distance of one mile for a purse of $200,000. The morning line favorite is Dale Romans’ Birdatthewire with Corey Lanerie in the irons. This filly has had one start here at Gulfstream this year in a Grade 2 event and won that race by over three lengths after being bumped at the start and then circling the field five wide. She wasn’t held in high regard in that one going off at 12 to 1. Normally she likes coming just off the pace, but because of the start problems she came from far back to win it. Second choice of the ML is Todd Pletcher’s Eskenformoney with Javier Castellano up. She is coming off two straight wins, but they were her maiden win and an optional claiming win. She likes it on the lead or just off lead win she fires. I am not sure why she is the second choice here other than she is a Todd Pletcher entry.

PucaThird choice in the ML is Kiaran McLaughlin’s Cavorting with Irad Ortiz in the saddle. She is coming in from New York where she won a Grade 2 affair and then finished last in a Grade 1 event. She likes it on the lead or close to it, but she has not been out since early October of 2014. I am not sure she can shake the rust off quickly enough to win this one. There are some more in the race that merit consideration. With three year old fillies one never knows when the filly will all of a sudden figure out why she is here and put up a bang up race. I am going to make a pick here and it is one that should not be overlooked. I believe the winner will be William Mott’s Puca with Joel Rosario riding. She has not raced since she finished sixth in the Grade 1 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies. She was only beaten by 3 lengths despite breaking slow that day and having a lot of trouble rounding the turn and heading for home. She has been working fairly well since then and is nominated to the Triple Crown. I think she just might get it done. Finishing second will be the undefeated Jacaranda and Birdatthewire will finish third. Happy Handicapping Gals and Guys!
