HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch August 4th

Day 2 of 2 Year Old Stampede

On Rainbow Bridge Wins Nandi StakesIt was an exciting Saturday in the 2 year old world of thoroughbred racing as we saw 8 two year old stakes races around the country. At Prairie Meadows, Haforuhaforme edged out a win over Golden Tiago in the Iowa Sorority and Boji Moon charged to a 12 ½ length victory in the Iowa Cradle. In the Wilhite Memorial at Louisiana Downs, Redgrass Cat got a neck in front of Thegirlinthatsong. Later in the Sunny’s Halo at Louisiana Downs Got Shades upset Da House by 3 ¾ lengths. General Jack caught a 3 length win over Chairman Crooks in the Shakopee Juvenile at Canterbury. Starting the big day off at Mountaineer in the Mountaineer Juvenile was Rise Up who earned a 4 ¾ lengths win over Bisque. In the Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies Stakes Silver Valley won over Deliver by 4 lengths. And On Rainbow Bridge captured another win in the Nandi at Woodbine, beating Paladin Bay by 1 ¼ lengths. Now let’s take a look at the 3 two year old stakes races for Sunday, August 4th– Monmouth’s Tyro Stakes, Emerald’s Angie C Stakes and Del Mar’s Best Pal Stakes.

Tyro Stakes at Monmouth

Yes I'm LuckyThe $60,000 Tyro Stakes is the 4th race on the card at Monmouth and will see 2 year olds go 5 furlongs over the turf. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Yes I’m Lucky. This colt showed his stuff in the Frank Gomez Memorial at Calder on June 22nd where he won by 4 lengths. He’s sporting a fantastic jockey/trainer combo with jockey Paco Lopez and trainer Edward Plesa Jr. There’s no doubt Yes I’m Lucky will be the horse to beat here, but we’ll have to see how well he transitions to the turf for this one. At the 3 to 1 morning line mark is Sweet Emma Rose, who’ll definitely give Yes I’m Lucky a run for his money! This filly has had a great looking career so far with a 9 length maiden win at Keeneland, a close 4th place finish in the Rollicking at Pimlico and a Grade 2 second place finish in the Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot on the turf. Joel Rosario had the mount in her last two races, but Angel Serpa will be in the irons for the Tyro. Silvertonguedtommy Wins Chenery StakesTrained by Wesley Ward, this filly might just show these boys up! Silvertonguedtommy is another contender in this one. He won the Chenery at Colonial and ran 2nd in the Rollicking, beating out Sweet Emma Rose. The turf experience in the Chenery could give him an edge here. The rest of the horses in this field look like they could hold their own with any of these 3 listed above, so I expect this race to be close, but… being one who loves to look for the value play, I have 2 to suggest to you. The first is Run For Logistics. Run For Logistics is another Edward Plesa Jr horse and he won his maiden at Monmouth by 5 ½ lengths. His last workout looks like he was just eased along, though and I wonder if he’ll be ready for this race or is using the Tyro as a prep for another race. That leaves us with Holy Rocker who is sitting on a fat 10 to 1 morning line. He hasn’t broken maiden yet, but in his career opener, he barely got beat by the morning line favorite, Yes I’m Lucky. Since then he has put up some sharp works including a 1 of 69, 48 and 1 4 furlong work and a 36 second 3 furlong work over the turf. Holy Rocker’s connections are training him for this race and I feel he has a huge chance of upsetting this field.

Angie C Stakes at Emerald

Emerald DownsThe $50,000 Angie C Stakes at Emerald Downs is the 9th race on the card and will spotlight 2 year old fillies traveling 6 furlongs. In this 7 filly field the 2 to 1 morning line favorite is Chu and You. Chu and You is trained by Robert Baze and will be ridden by Juan Gutierrez. This filly won her maiden race at Emerald by 5 ¾ lengths in a $25,000 maiden claimer on July 13th. Chu and You looks to be the horse to beat in this one. Next in the morning line odds line-up is Strawberry Dawn. Strawberry Dawn won her maiden race by 2 ½ lengths in a straight $18,000 maiden race. Dan Markle is the trainer and Flores Camacho will be in the irons. A daughter of Tribal Rule, I like Strawberry Dawn in this one. Tinkerbelle Tops is a live contender in this race, though and deserves a look. This filly has a nice jockey/trainer combo in jockey Deborah Hoonan and trainer Charles Essex. Hoonan had been on Strawberry Dawn in her maiden race, but has opted for Tinkerbelle Tops for the Angie C. Winning her maiden by 5 lengths, Tinkerbelle Tops is showing some great times and honest works and should be ready for this race. For a little bit of a value play, I think See My Tail Lites will put on a show in the Angie C. She has a great jockey/trainer combo in jockey Isaias Enriquez and trainer Jim Penney. She won her maiden race by ¾ of a length at Emerald, showed some good speed and has some strong workouts leading into this race. Look for See My Tail Lites at the finish.

Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar

Alpine Luck & OntologyThe $150,000 Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar will be the 8th race of the day and is set at 6 ½ furlongs.  Oddly enough, the 5/2 morning line favorite is Ontology. I say this is odd, because he has yet to break maiden and has run 2nd to Alpine Luck in both of his 2 outings. Alpine Luck’s morning line is 3 to 1. At any rate, both of these 2 year olds will be battling it out in the Best Pal and Ontology will certainly give Alpine Luck a go here. Ontology will have the blinkers on and this could give him an edge. I will say that it looks as if Ontology enjoys the track at Del Mar based on his workouts and this could prove to be a major factor in this race. Besides this rivalry, we have to look at Skydreamin, as well. Skydreamin has already captured two stakes races by winning the Lost in the Fog Stakes at Golden Gate and the Everett Nevin Stakes at Pleasanton. Skydreamin will also have the added benefit of Mike Smith as his jockey in the Best Pal. Something I like to see at Del Mar are horses who have won at Golden Gate because they generally do well, so this makes me like Skydreamin even more. I look for this horse to perform well here. SkydreaminFor a longshot play in the Best Pal, I’m looking at Celtic Moon who is sitting at 12 to 1 morning line odds. He was beaten by Alpine Luck and Ontology in his first start at Hollywood Park, running 3rd 5 ¾ lengths behind the leader. In that race he had some trouble getting bumped early and ending up 4 wide in the lane. He followed that race up with a win over the turf July 7th sporting a nice time for the distance. Trained by Peter Miller and ridden by Edwin Maldonado, I expect Celtic Moon to hit the board. For my value play, I think Guns Loaded might be the horse for the Best Pal. He is the only horse to have run and won at Del Mar, breaking maiden at the 75k level. He seems to love the track and I think he could give them all a run for the money here.

That’s it for Sunday August 4th, but be sure to check back with us on Monday for 2 two year old stakes races at Hastings and again on Wednesday with the Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar!
