HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch- Bashford Manor & My Dear

My Dear Stakes & Bashford Manor

Wake Up NickThis Saturday we have 2 two year old stakes up for your consideration with the $100,000 Grade 3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs and the $125,000 My Dear Stakes at Woodbine. Before we dive off into those two events, let’s take a look at last weekend’s results. Last Sunday we had two stakes races at Santa Anita for two year olds. In the Santa Anita Juvenile Stakes, our value play Wake Up Nick won by ¾ of a length over Story To Tell and paid $10.80 for the win. You definitely want to keep your eyes on both of these young horses. In the Landaluce Stakes, Enchanting Lady cast her spell with a 6 ¼ length victory over Seduire and paid $4.60 for the win. Our value play, Robo Girl didn’t fare nearly as well as I had hoped, but I would look for her to put up a redemption effort in her next one at good odds. Let’s see what Saturday has in store for us.

Bashford Manor

Cinco CharlieThe $100,000 Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes is the 6th race on the card for Churchill Downs on Saturday and will feature a field of 6 two year olds in a six furlong event. The 9/5 morning line favorite is Cinco Charlie. Ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan and trained by Steve Asmussen, Cinco Charlie won his first and only outing on May 9th at Churchill in a straight maiden 44k. I may be wrong, but I am not sold on this horse for this race. Before his maiden win, Cinco Charlie put up a nice bullet work, but since then his workouts aren’t as impressive. An entry here who has been training well is Governmentshutdown at 2 to 1 on the ML. Coming out of Pimlico he is 2 for 3 so far, including 3 ¾ lengths win in the Rolicking Stakes. My value play here is going to be Skyway, though, at 3 to 1 on the morning line. He won his first outing back in April at Keeneland and took it with a driving 6 ¾ length win. He’s been training well ever since and I look for him to show us something in the Bashford. For a longshot to consider, I like Asmussen’s other entry here, Lucky Player at 6 to 1 on the ML.  He looks ready for a big run and should be considered in your exotics.

My Dear Stakes

WoodbineThe $125,000 My Dear Stakes is the 8th race on the card Saturday at Woodbine and will host a field of 7 two year old fillies sprinting 5 furlongs. The 9/5 morning line favorite is Sweet Dreams.  Sweet Dreams won her first outing in a straight maiden 56k at Woodbine by 2 ½ lengths and will be one to watch here in the My Dear. I like her running style but I feel she may be at a disadvantage in this race because of it. For a small pinch of value, I like Unhindered at 2 to 1 on the ML. In her first outing, Unhindered won by 5 lengths and was widening that lead in hand! I look for her to make a gate to wire run in the My Dear and not look back. For a longshot play and one who should definitely be considered in your exotics, I Like Zia at 6 to 1 on the morning line. Zia made a nice come-from-behind run in her first and only outing, running 2nd behind Sweet Dreams by 2 ½ lengths. Since then she has put up a very nice bullet work and I expect to see her perform well in this one. First time starter, Dixie Twist also looks capable of running well here. Good luck everybody!
