HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch- December 22nd

Sunday’s 2 Year Old Stakes

Mr SpeakerThis Sunday we have 2 two year old stakes races to consider. The East View Stakes which had been scheduled to run last Sunday was rescheduled to today due to bad weather. We also have the King Glorious Stakes at Hollywood. Before we get into these two races, let’s look at the results from Saturday’s 2 year old stakes. In the Eleanor Casey Memorial at Charles Town, Practical Ideas pulled out a romp and won by 6 ¼ lengths and paid $12.60 for the win. Mr Speaker showed up for the upset in the Dania Beach at Gulfstream winning by 2 ¾ lengths over Cabo Cat. Mr Speaker paid $23.40 for the win and the exacta with Cabo Cat paid a nice $493.00! Now let’s look at today’s races.

East View Stakes at Aqueduct

Miss NarcissistThe $100,000 East View Stakes at Aqueduct is the 8th race on the card Sunday and will host a field of 8 New York foaled 2 year old fillies traveling 1m & 70 yards. The top two contenders in the East View are Miss Narcissist at 2/1 on the morning line and Flipcup at 5/2. Miss Narcissist is undefeated in her last 3 starts with wins in the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes at Belmont and the New York Stallion Series Stakes at Aqueduct. She also has the best speed figure in this field. Flipcup ran 3rd in the South Ocean Stakes at Woodbine and had 2 wins prior to that. The problem here is that if Miss Narcissist grabs that early lead with ease then she is likely to win it from gate to wire, controlling the pace. G Note should give her some trouble, though and contest her for the early lead. Flipcup might try and contest her for the front end early, too, and that might open up a slim chance for Champagne Ruby to stalk and upset here. So for a longshot/value play I’m giving the nod to Champagne Ruby at 6 to 1 on the morning line. But the longshot I like most here is Skye Saratoga at 8 to 1 on the ML. Skye Saratoga has the stalking style needed to get the upset over Miss Narcissist and has the speed to do it. Look for her at the wire.

King Glorious at Hollywood

AotearoaThe $200,000 King Glorious Stakes at Hollywood Park is the 10th race on the card Sunday and will feature a field of 11 California bred or sired 2 year olds set to go 7 furlongs. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Aotearoa. Aotearoa is coming out of a second place finish in the Grade 3 Generous at Hollywood and looks ready for this one. Corey Nakatani is back onboard for this one and despite a 7th place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, he did guide Aotearoa to a solid victory in the Zuma Beach at Santa Anita. For value, I like Pray Hard at 4 to 1 on the morning line. If all goes well Pray Hard should be uncontested on the lead and should control this race’s pace. He has the speed to get it done here. For a longshot, I’m backing Better Bet at 12/1 on the ML. Again, if all goes well for this horse, he should contest Pray Hard for the lead and has the speed to hang in there and upset this field. Good luck everyone!
