HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch- Louisiana Futurities

New Year’s Eve 2 Year Old Stakes

Joint CustodyThis Tuesday we have 2 two year old stakes races up for consideration. This will be the last 2 year old stakes races for 2013 as all two year olds turn 3 on the 1st. Our 2 races are Louisiana Futurities at the Fair Grounds. Before we dig into these events, let’s take a look at Saturday’s results. In the Arizona Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Turf Paradise longshot Idling upset the two favorites Lazy Daisy May and Jet Set Kitten by ½ a length and paid a nice $39.60 for the win!  In the Lost in the Fog Juvenile Stakes, French invader My Rochester pulled off a huge upset and paid $29.00 for the win. Our longshot play, J P Rocker ran second and paid $7.80 for the place. Finally in the Maryland Juvenile Championship at Laurel, favorite Joint Custody won by 5 ½ lengths over our longshot play, Fran’s Buckaroo. Now let’s head to the Fair grounds and see what we can find for this New Year’s Eve events.

Louisiana Futurity (Race 7)

Fair GroundsThe $100,000 Louisiana Futurity for 2 year old Louisiana bred colts and geldings is the 7th race on the card at the Fair grounds and will host a field of 7 traveling 6 furlongs. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Yankee Gambler. Yankee Gambler won his career debut at Lone Star Park by 6 ¼ lengths. My concern is that this race was in May and Yankee Gambler has not been out since. He has an outstanding jockey/trainer combo in jockey, Rosie Napravnik and trainer, Bret Calhoun, but that’s right at half of the year without racing. He has been training nicely for this race, so I certainly wouldn’t count him out. I believe the 2 real threats to this field are Dixie Beat and Yankee Hunter, both at 3 to 1 on the ML. Yankee Hunter is likely to take the early lead with some competition from Yankee Gambler and Boston Bash. I believe that Yankee Hunter can outlast them both, but it might take enough out of him to give Dixie Beat the advantage over them all. For a value/longshot play, I’m leaning towards Forerun at 5 to 1 on the morning line. He has the speed to contend with these 2 year olds and could stalk the pace here for an upset.

Louisiana Futurity (Race 9)

Fair Grounds Race CourseThe $106,000 Louisiana Futurity for 2 year old Louisiana bred fillies is the 9th race on the card at Fair Grounds and will showcase a field of 12 battling it out over 6 furlongs. Sweet Alice Benbow is the 7/2 morning line favorite. She has one of the best speed figures of this bunch and won her last outing by 7 ½ lengths on December 14th at 6 furlongs. She will be the one to beat. For value, I like Nurse Emmielle at 8 to 1 on the ML. Her top speed figure actually bests Sweet Alice Benbow’s and if she can run back to that form- look out! She also has James Graham back onboard who brought her to a close 3rd place finish in her last outing. I look for a strong run from this filly and a possible upset. For a longshot, I’m considering French Celebrity at 12 to 1 on the morning line. French Celebrity won her last race by 6 lengths and put up a speed figure that’s comparable to Sweet Alice Benbow. The track at Fair Grounds seems to suit her and I look for a big run from this filly as well. Good luck everyone and have a happy New Year!
