HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch- October 25th

Friday’s 2 Year Old Stakes

Matador Noses Cool Faith in Cup & SaucerOn Friday October 25th we have 2 two year old stakes races for your consideration. The first is at Remington Park with the E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes and the second is at Delta Downs with the My Trusty Cat Stakes. Before we take a look at these 2 races, let’s recap Sunday’s Cup and Saucer Stakes at Woodbine. This one was so close, my stomach turned at the wire! Matador nosed out my value play, Cool Faith. The filly had been on the lead for most of the race, but Matador gunned her down at the last second and paid $7.50 for the win. Even more surprising was Asserting Bear who missed it by ¾ of a length. All 3 of these horses will be on my watch list going forward. Now let’s take a look at our Friday races and try and locate the value plays.

E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes

Beau RavelleThe $50,000 E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes is the 8th race on the card at Remington Park on Friday and will showcase a field of 9 two year old fillies traveling 6 ½ furlongs. The morning line favorite is the coupled entry of Honey’s Ryan and Beau Ravelle.  The very slight edge goes to Beau Ravelle here. She recently won her career debut at Remington by 8 ½ lengths in a straight maiden 28k coming from mid-pack to capture the lead by the stretch and never look back. Honey’s Ryan has 2 races under her belt, running 3rd in her first outing and winning her second race by 7 lengths. The comment she received for this performance was “Never roused”. This entry covers the bases for this race since Beau Ravelle can stalk and Beau Ravelle can lead, so they’ll be tough to beat here. For a touch of value, I like Bakken Baby at 9/2 on the ML. She won her last race by 12 lengths in a non-winners of two in hand during the final furlong, so I think she’ll make a nice fit here. She does have some stakes experience having run 3rd in the Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes at Prairie Meadows, and I believe she’ll be a true contender in this one. For a longshot, I like Dream S’more at 10 to 1 on the morning line. She has some nice works and her speed is steadily improving, so I look for her to at least hit the board if not upset the field.

My Trusty Cat Stakes

Bahnah Dead Heats with Brazen Persuasion in SchuylervilleThe $150,000 My Trusty Cat Stakes is the 8th race at Delta Downs on Friday and will host a field of 7 two year old fillies set to go 7 furlongs. The 6/5 morning line favorite is Bahnah. She is the only graded stakes winner having won the Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga back in July by 1 ¼ lengths, dead-heating with Brazen Persuasion. My first thought was why in the world is this filly at Delta Downs?! No offense to Delta, because I have actually been to that track on several occasions and love it, but Bahnah doesn’t belong with these horses. She did bounce in the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga running 6th, but she has won at Saratoga and Churchill Downs. She is definitely the class here and unless she has a rough trip, should be the public’s top choice, hands down. Her speed figure in the Spinaway is comparable to the rest of this field, so let’s see who might upset this filly. Lady Grantham is a possible contender at 4 to 1 on the ML. She recently won the Louisiana Stallion Stakes at Louisiana Downs by 3 ½ lengths and has some speed figures that could match up with Bahnah. Her works look solid and she should definitely be in the money. Check back with us Saturday for more 2 year old action and good luck!
