HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch- October 27th

Sunday’s 2 Year Old Stakes

Bahnah Disqualified in My Trusty Cat StakesWe have 7 two year old stakes races to handicap. First, let’s recap the recent 2 year old stakes races starting with Friday’s E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes at Remington Park. Honey’s Ryan dominated this field by 6 lengths, with Bakken Baby running a distant 2nd. At Delta Downs on Friday we had the My Trusty Cat Stakes. The clear favorite was Bahnah and I still don’t understand why this filly was at Delta! Regardless of my thoughts, she would have won had she not been disqualified from 1st place to 5th! What a disaster. Due to her disqualification, Synapse won paying $32.00 for the win making someone really happy, lol. Unfortunately, that someone was not me. Oh, well…such is horse racing. Let’s take a look at Sunday’s races.

Street Sense Stakes at Churchill

Churchill DownsThe $60,000 Street Sense Stakes will be the 5th race on the card at Churchill Downs on Sunday and will feature 7 two year olds traveling 1 mile. The morning line favorite is 8/5 Ride On Curlin, who should be tough to beat in this one. Ride On Curlin has 3 points towards the 2014 Kentucky Derby with a 4th place finish in the Iroquois and a 3rd place finish in the Champagne. His works are top notch and he has the speed potential to be something fierce. A possible contender who could challenge him is Coastline, who is a part of a coupled entry with Phenomenalmoon and is 2 to 1 on the ML. I believe Coastline will fight Ride On Curlin for the front-end lead in this one, along with 3 to 1 Almost Famous. For that reason, I like Chippewawhitechief as my value/longshot play at 12 to 1 on the morning line. I look for Chippewawhitechief to make a late chargeand show up for this one.

Rags to Riches Stakes at Churchill

Churchill DownsThe $60,000 Rags to Riches Stakes is the 9th race at Churchill. This field of 8 two year old fillies is set to go 1 mile. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Ocean Boulevard. This 2 year old filly ran 5th in the Grade 2 Matron, so she has some stakes experience, but her speed figures indicate she is better suited for this field than she was in that event. Unfortunate for her, the top speed figure in this field belongs to Tepin. She looks more qualified to win this one and should be the one to beat here. For value, I like Clever Beauty at 5 to 1 on the ML. This filly is making strides towards steady improvement and should show us something Sunday. Her works are solid and I look for her to put up a great effort in this one.

Sharp Cat Stakes at Belmont

Miss BehaviourWe have 4 races at Belmont, starting with the $100,000 Sharp Cat Stakes. The Sharp Cat will feature a field of 6 two year old fillies battling it out over 6 ½ furlongs. Miss Behaviour is the 9/5 morning line favorite. She is undefeated in 3 starts that include an 8 ¼ length victory in the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth and one length victory in the Grade 2 Matron at Belmont. She will definitely be the one to beat here. Tea Time is a strong contender at 2 to 1 on the ML. She flopped in the Frizette running 6th, but she certainly has the potential and speed to give Miss Behaviour a run for it. For a possible value play, I like Winekeeper at 8 to 1. Her works look solid and she has the speed to get there. For a longshot, I like Storm Swept who has the running style that could help her best this field.

Chelsea Flower Stakes at Belmont

AibhilinThe $100,000 Chelsea Flower Stakes is the 6th race on the card and will host a field of 12 two year old fillies looking to run it out over 1mile on the turf. The 7/2 morning line favorite is Zloty. Zloty is coming off of her maiden win over the turf at Belmont. She won that race by 1 length at a greater distance than this event, so getting the distance will be no problem. If Zloty stalks in this race as expected, she should do well. Should she decide to nail the early lead, I believe she will have problems. For value, I really like Bikini Beauty at 8 to 1. She bounced in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont, but I believe she will fare well here. She’s also receiving first time Lasix and should be eager to run. For value, I’m going with Aibhilin at 12 to 1. She’s coming out of a close win in the Selima at Laurel and has the speed to get the job done here.

Awad Stakes at Belmont

Belmont ParkThe $100,000 Awad Stakes will spotlight a field of 9 two year olds going 1 mile on the turf. The 6/5 morning line favorite is Financial Mogul, but is entered as main track only. Should this race get pulled from the turf and onto the dirt, Financial Mogul would be the horse to beat, so keep this in mind come betting time! Otherwise, Mansion House is the ML favorite at 8/5. Mansion House has had some good efforts in Ireland and will be running state-side for the first time. He will also be receiving first time Lasix and could be a real threat here. The real threat should be coming from Storming Inti at 5/2 on the morning line. Storming Inti is coming out of a ¾ length victory in a straight maiden 85k at Belmont over the turf. This 2 year old has the speed and turf experience to do well here. My second choice for value is Cabo Cat at 5 to 1. Look for a late run from this colt with Luis Saez in the irons.

New Mexico Classic Juvenile Fillies at Zia

Zia ParkIt’s New Mexico Classic Day at Zia Park and the $140,000 New Mexico Classic JuvenileStakes is the 6th race on the card Sunday. This 6 furlong event will host a field of 12 two year old fillies. The 5/2 morning line favorite is That’s the Idea. Undefeated in 2 starts, this young filly recently won the Rio Grande Senorita Futurity at Ruidoso Downs and looks set to pounce in this one… at least that’s the idea. All jokes aside, she does look like the one to beat here. The only other contender here as far as speed goes is Lady Genius. Lady Genius ran 2nd behind That’s the Idea in the Rio Grande Senorita Futurity and looks to redeem herself here. Her works are solid and she seems ready to improve in this one. I look for it to be a close battle between these two down to the wire.

New Mexico Classic Juvenile at Zia

PoblanoThe $140,000 New Mexico Classic Juvenile follows that race and will see a field of 12 two year old colts and geldings in a 6 furlong event. The 3 to 1 morning line favorite is Poblano. Poblano recently won the George Maloof Futurity at Albuquerque by 7 ¼ lengths. There is no doubt that Poblano has some “hot” speed figures, but for a real smoking speed, I like Cataflying at 6 to 1 on the morning line. Don’t let that morning line fool you- Cataflying has got more than enough speed to nail this one. The 2 year old gelding recently won his career opener at Zia by 12 lengths! Granted it was a straight maiden 28k, but I’m willing to bet that this horse has got what it takes and more to trounce this field. Only a speed duel will hurt this horse, but I don’t think they’ll be able to catch him. I look for Cataflying to go gate to wire here and never look back.
