HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch- October 5th

Saturday’s 2 Year Old Stakes Races

My ConquestadoryWe have a few exciting 2 year old stakes races on deck for Saturday, but before we dive head long into Saturday’s action, let’s quickly recap the Darley Alcibiades Stakes from Friday at Keeneland. Favorite My Conquestadory won out over Rosalind by by 1 3/4 lengths in the Darley Alcibiades as many expected. For Saturday we have 2 at Belmont with the Foxwoods Champagne and the Frizette Stakes, as well as the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, the Mazarine Stakes at Woodbine, the Jersey Juvenile Stakes at Monmouth and the Charlie Palmer Futurity at Fresno. Since both the Foxwoods Champagne and Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity Stakes are 2014 Kentucky Derby Points races, they are in a post all there on that you can find here- Champagne & Breeders’ Futurity Preview. The rest of the 2 year old action for Saturday starts below!

Charlie Palmer Futurity at Fresno

SkydreaminThe $50,000 Charlie Palmer Futurity Stakes is the 8th race at Fresno and will feature a field of 8 set to go one mile. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Go First. Go First won his last race at Del Mar by ½ a length and has the best speed figure in this field with that win. 3 to 1 on the ML is Hirschy who won the Cavonnier Juvenile Stakes at Santa Rosa on August 11th. He followed that race with a disappointing 5th in the Barretts Juvenile Stakes. The better play here in my opinion is Life Is a Joy at 4 to 1. If no one goes with him early, he could very well take this one home. His speed figure isn’t quite up to par with Go First, but he is showing steady signs of improvement and could be a real threat here. But the best value play here has to be Skydreamin. Skydreamin started his career off strong winning both the Lost in The Fog Stakes at Golden Gate and the Everett Nevin Stakes at Pleasanton. He then failed miserably in the Best Pal and Del Mar Futurity Stakes running last in both events. I look for Skydreamin to shake off the 2 bad outings and make a comeback run in this race.

Jersey Juvenile Stakes at Monmouth

Flay MignonThe $60,000 Jersey Juvenile Stakes is the 5th race on the card at Monmouth and will feature a field of 5 two year old New Jersey Breds traveling 6 furlongs. At 8/5 on the morning line is Flay Mignon, winner of the Colleen Stakes at Monmouth on August 11th. Flay Mignon followed that race up and flopped in the Sorority stakes running 7th. I believe she will be back strong in this one, but she will also be competing in mixed company. 2 to 1 on the ML is Charleymillionaire. This 2 year old colt recently won a straight maiden 50k by 2 lengths after running a nice 2nd place finish in a straight maiden 100k. He will have to duke it out with Flay Mignon for the early lead and this may cause both of these contenders some problems. For my value play, I’m going with She’s Hot Wired. She won her maiden race/career opener at Monmouth in a straight maiden 50k. Her speed figure was slow, but she was far from showing everything she has and won it by 4 lengths. I see her coming off of the pace in this one and grabbing an upset at 6 to 1 on the morning line.

Mazarine Stakes at Woodbine

LlanarmonThe $150,000 Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes is for 2 year old fillies going 1 1/16 of a mile. This field of 8 fillies will battle it out in the 8th race at Woodbine Saturday. The 5/2 morning line favorite is Llanarmon who won the Grade 2 Natalma at Woodbine by ¾ of a length on September 14th. My only gripe with her is that this will be her first race off of the turf. I’m not sure if she will adjust to it as well as the ML indicates. There were a few accidents in that Natalma Stakes that helped her with the win, so I can’t throw my trust in her fully. The same could be said about Spanish Flower and Appreciating who finished 2nd and 3rd in that accident marred race. The most impressive run from the Natalma in my opinion was from Madly Truly. Despite having swung wide, this filly made a very nice rally from 7th to 4th from stretch to finish and was gaining ground. For that reason, Madly Truly will be value play in this one. For a longshot, I like Tamazula. She has the highest speed figure in the field and at 8 to 1 on the morning line, she must be considered.

Frizette Stakes at Belmont

Sweet ReasonThe 9th race on the card at Belmont is the $500,000 Grade 1 Frizette Stakes for 2 year old fillies traveling a mile. The 8/5 morning line favorite is Sweet Reason.  Sweet Reason is undefeated in 2 starts including her recent victory in the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga. She won that race by 5 ¾ lengths ridden out and is definitely the filly to beat here. Looking to get payback is Stopchargingmaria at 3 to 1 on the ML. She finished 2nd in the Spinaway. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Stopchargingmaria stands a good chance of doing just that. Both of these fillies will be tough, but I am considering 2 value plays that may take this race by storm. They are Tea Time and Artemis Agrotera. Both of these fillies are going to fight for that front end lead and I believe in this race they both have the ability to fight it down to the wire. They are both sporting excellent speed figures from their past races. I believe Artemis Agrotera has the advantage, but it should be very close. I’m expecting a head bobber finish with these 2 first and second. Check back with us Sunday for more 2 year old stakes action and good luck!
