HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch-September 13th

Friday the 13th at Barretts

Bob BaffertFor this edition of HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch we’re back at Barretts for the $50,000 Phillip D. Shepherd Stakes and even though it’s Friday the 13th, we’re going to luck for a little nugget of luck in this race! Before that though, let’s recap what happened Wednesday in the C.B. Afflerbaugh Stakes at Barretts. Morning line even money favorite Echo Zulu was outrun by Roundupthelute who finished 2 lengths ahead. I felt like Echo Zulu would be beaten, but I was hoping for one of the longshots to upset this field. Instead, the Bob Baffert trained Roundupthelute lived up to his potential and took this one home. Let’s take a look at the race for Friday.

Phillip D Shepherd Stakes

Bandini, Sire of Santa LuciaThe $50,000 Phillip D Shepherd Stakes is the 9th race on the card at Barretts and will host a field of 7 two year old fillies traveling 7 furlongs. The 8/5 morning line favorite is Be Proud. Be Proud has yet to break maiden after two decent outings at Del Mar where she finished 2nd in one and 4th in the other. This is another Baffert trained horse (who coincidentally has 2 entered in this race) and she will be ridden by Martin Garcia. Her works look good and she should be ready for this one. Next on the ML is 5/2 Miss Scatalicious. Her works look good, too and after winning her first and only outing in a 75k straight maiden at Del Mar by a neck, Miss Scatalicious looks the best of this field. Another strong contender here could be Elegant Trick. Elegant Trick has yet to win her first one, but made a nice 3rd place finish in her only outing at Del Mar. With a lot of front end speed in this race her stalking nature should serve her well in this one. But I’m going to go out on a limb and tout the longest shot on the board, Santa Lucia. I’m not sure why this daughter of Bandini is getting downplayed on the morning line to 20 to 1, but I’ll take it! She ran 5th in the Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar and although she didn’t perform as well as her connections had hoped, she is well suited to shine in this one. She actually beat Love Smitten in that race who is sitting at 4 to 1 on the morning line here. I’m still scratching my head on that one! At any rate, I feel that Santa Lucia is the value/longshot play here and her come from behind nature should put her in the money. Check back with us Saturday for more 2 year old racing action!
