HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch- September 28th

Saturday’s 2 Year Olds Stakes

Tamarando beating Dance With Fate & Can the Man in Del Mar FuturityThis weekend there are 8 two year old stakes races around the country, including the Frontrunner at Santa Anita. Because the Frontrunner is a 2014 Kentucky Derby Points race, it has a preview all its own that you can check out here- Kentucky Derby Points- Frontrunner at Santa Anita. We also have the Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita, the New York Breeder’s Futurity, Tin Cup Chalice, and the Shesastonecoldfox Stakes at Finger Lakes, the Cassidy Stakes and Birdonthewire Stakes at Calder and the Victorian Queen Stakes at Woodbine. That’s a lot of 2 year old action! Because of time constraints, I am unable to give a full breakdown like I normally do, mostly because I have been swamped looking at all of the other major horse races that are going on this weekend and because I do value sleep from time to time. But I couldn’t leave you guys hanging, so for this edition of HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch, I’m going to give you a really quick breakdown of each race, the way I see it. Short and to the point- here we go!

Calder’s Cassidy Stakes

Secret KittenThe Cassidy Stakes is for 2 year old fillies going 6 furlongs and is the 7th race on the card at Calder. Secret Kitten is the 9/5 favorite on the morning line and will be the one to beat. For a value play, I like Pomeroy Angel at 4 to 1 on the ML.  For a longshot, I’m going with first time starter, Congrats Honey at 6 to 1 on the ML.

Calder’s Birdonthewire Stakes

The Birdonthewire Stakes is for 2 year olds also going 6 furlongs and is the 8th race on the card at Calder. Run for Logistics is the 8/5 morning line favorite, having run 2nd in the Tyro and 3rd in the Sapling. The more consistent horse at 4 to 1on the ML is Macho Trini. He ran 4th in the Calder Dash, but turf may not be his thing and is back on the dirt for this one. There seems to be a lot of front-end speed here so my value/longshot play is with Tea’s Two Step.  Look for the late charge.

Finger Lakes Tin Cup Chalice

The Tin Cup Chalice Stakes is for 2 year old colts and geldings going 6 furlongs and is the 3rd race on the card at Finger Lakes. Sing the Dream is the 6/5 morning line favorite coming out of his maiden win at Penn National where he won a straight maiden 30k by 9 lengths. Close on his heels at 9/5 on the ML is Patriot Star. He ran 2nd in the Aspirant Stakes at Finger Lakes, but I don’t feel he has the speed to contest Sing the Dream, much like the rest of this field. If there is any chance of an upset here, you might consider first time starters Gutsy Gras or Sam the Man I Am.

Finger Lakes New York Breeder’s Futurity

Fox RoxThe New York Breeder’s Futurity is for 2 year olds foaled in New York going 6 furlongs and is the 7th race on the card at Finger Lakes. Wired Bryan is the 2 to 1 morning line favorite and rightfully so.  He ran 5th in the Hopeful at Saratoga, but had a close 2nd place finish in the Saratoga Special and a 5 ¼ length victory in the Sanford. Ogermeister could give Wired Bryan a run for it in this one at 4 to 1 on the ML. He was 2nd in the Law Enforcement Stakes at Saratoga. My value play is Fox Rox, though. He was 1st in the Aspirant Stakes at Finger Lakes winning by 18 lengths, ridden out.

Finger Lakes Shesastonecoldfox Stakes

The Shesastonecoldfox Stakes is for 2 year old fillies foaled in New York going 6 furlongs and is the 9th race on the card at Finger Lakes. Alwaysinstilettos is the 2 to 1 morning line favorite having won the Lady Finger Stakes at Finger Lakes by 4 lengths. Miss Narcissist should give her a run for her money at 3 to 1 on the ML, coming out of a maiden win in a straight maiden 70k at Saratoga. My value play would be So Smart. With first time Lasix and the blinkers on I look for So Smart to upset this field at 6 to 1 on the morning line.

Woodbine’s Victorian Queen Stakes

The Victorian Queen Stakes is for 2 year old fillies going 6 furlongs and is the 8th race on the card at Woodbine. On Rainbow Bridge is the 8/5 morning line favorite. Her rival will be Lexie Lou who won the Muskoka over On Rainbow Bridge through a disqualification. Both fillies may have a serious threat in Regal Conqueror at 2 to 1 on the ML. If no one goes with Regal Conqueror she has the ability to own this one gate to wire. For a value play, Lia’s Miracle is my choice. She ran 3rd in the Nandi behind On Rainbow Bridge, but seemed to have some troubles in that race. I look for those corrections to have been made and Lia’s Miracle to show improvement here.

Santa Anita’s Chandelier Stakes

She's A TigerThe Chandelier Stakes is a Grade 1 event for 2 year old fillies going 1 1/16 of a mile and is the 5th race on the card at Santa Anita. Fascinating is the 2 to 1 morning line favorite here running 2nd in the Del Mar Debutant. The winner of that race was She’s a Tiger who is 5/2 on the ML for this race. There is a lot of front-end speed here giving Fascinating the edge, but for a value play I like Colonel Joan. Look for a late charge from this daughter of Colonel John.

That’s a wrap, folks. Check back with us Sunday for more 2 year old stakes action!
