HHR’s 2 Year Old Stakes Watch- Victoria & Debutante

2 Year Old Stakes Watch, June 21st, 2014

Bessie's BoyThis Saturday we have the $125,000 Victoria Stakes at Woodbine and the $100,000 Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs for our 2 year old stakes watch. Before we get into that, let’s take a look at last week’s 2 year old event, the Astoria at Belmont. In that race, Fashion Alert won by 4 ¾ lengths over Liatris, paying $5.70 for the win. Rounding out the trifecta was Lindy. The Tremont Stakes was scheduled at Belmont for last Sunday, but for whatever reason was moved to Friday, June 20th. In that event, Bessie’s Boy ran away from this field and won by 6 lengths over Chocolate Wildcat and paid $6.00 for the win. Now let’s take a look at the Victoria at Woodbine.

Woodbine’s Victoria Stakes

Conquest TsunamiThe $125,000 Victoria Stakes will feature a field of 6 two year olds sprinting 5 furlongs in the 8th race on Saturday at Woodbine. The 6/5 morning line favorite is Conquest Tsunami. Trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Patrick Husbands, Conquest Tsunami will definitely be one to beat here. In his first and only outing, he won a straight maiden 50k at Keeneland in a 7 horse field by 6 ¼ lengths. That was a 4 ½ furlong event and he’ll have no problems picking up the extra distance. At 8/5 on the ML is Creaky Cricket. Creaky cricket is coming out of his maiden win at Arlington where he romped in a straight maiden 36k and won by 11 lengths in a 4 ½ furlong event. He finished that race drawing off under a hand ride. Although he’s not much of a value over Conquest Tsunami, he is my choice for value here. For a longshot, I’m looking at R U Watchingbud at 15 to 1 on the morning line. He made a pretty impressive run in his first outing and could be a threat Saturday. He has the home field advantage at Woodbine and will have Emma-Jayne Wilson in the irons.

Churchill’s Debutante Stakes

Unbridled RewardThe $100,000 Debutante Stakes will host a field of 6 two year old fillies set to travel 6 furlongs in the 8th race on Saturday at Churchill Downs. The morning line favorite is Unbridled Reward at 2/1. Trained by Mark Casse, Unbridled Reward will receive the services of Alan Garcia for this event. She won her first and only outing in a straight maiden 44k at Churchill on May 30th, winning by 7 ¾ lengths. She looks sharp for this race and will certainly be a threat. Rachel’s Ready poses a threat to her on the ML at 3/1. She won her first outing on June 8th in a straight maiden 44k at Churchill, winning by 1 ¾ lengths. Both of these fillies will be tough to contend with, but for value I like Promise Me Silver at 3/1 on the morning line. I believe the public will ignore this shipper from Lone Star and we should get a better price on her. She won her first outing by 6 ¾ lengths handily, and I feel she has a great shot at upsetting the top 2 here. Good luck everybody!
