Mucho Macho Man Returns & Rainbow 6 Picks

2014 Sunshine Millions Classic

Mucho Macho ManOn Saturday, January 18th we have the Sunshine Millions at Gulfstream Park including the Sunshine Millions Classic featuring Mucho Macho Man’s 2014 debut. This will be the 12th annual Florida Sunshine Millions Day and will be hosted by Gulfstream Park this year. Sunshine Millions Day will host 6 stakes events this year including the Filly and Mare Sprint, Sprint, Filly and Mare Turf, Turf, Distaff and Classic. In the $400,000 Sunshine Millions Classic, a field of 6 four year olds and up will face off over 1 1/8 mile. Mucho Macho Man starts his 2014 campaign here and stands tall within this field. Since his close victory in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic over Will Take Charge, Mucho Macho Man has been in training at Gulfstream and should be more than ready to take this race. Although winning the Sunshine Millions Classic in 2012, he did not finish the race in last year’s edition being pulled up in the stretch. It was a sloppy track that day and it is believed that he simply did not like the track. Mike Smith, who was responsible for easing Mucho up in the race, felt that he was having trouble breathing. At any rate, he came out of that race fine and looks good to make up for it in this year’s event. The weather looks good for Saturday’s race, so it’s doubtful he’ll have any problems here.

Bernie the MaestroAs for competition, there are really only 2 horses that I think might even have remote possibilities to upset the champ. The first is Bernie the Maestro at 4 to 1.  Bernie the Maestro is trained by Michael Maker and will be ridden by Joel Rosario. His speed figures are within striking distance of Mucho Macho Man on a bad day and his works are solid. I look for him to try and take the early lead and if he is successful in doing so, he might could control the pace of the race and have enough to out-kick the rest for him. It’s doubtful, but if I had to make a play against Mucho, this would be the horse. For a longshot play, I would look at Gourmet Dinner at 6 to 1 on the morning line. Javier Castellano gets the mount here, which is a big plus in the horse’s favor. He put up a couple of pretty good speed figures at Parx recently and may have the speed to at least give Mucho some competition. All in all though, Mucho Macho Man should win this one uncontested and I have selected him as my single play in the 20 cent Rainbow 6 for Races 6-11. The rest of our selections for the Rainbow 6 are below. Good luck!
