Shuvee & TVG Coaching Club American Oaks Preview

2013 Shuvee Handicap at Saratoga

ShuveeIt is my honor to preview the Grade 3 Shuvee Handicap at Saratoga. The Shuvee is for three year old and upward fillies and mares going a distance of 11/8 mile with a purse of $200,000. Let me talk just a little about the great horse Shuvee. She is an American Thoroughbred Champion Hall of Fame racehorse and was the second filly to ever win the Filly Triple Crown. She had 44 starts, 16 wins, 10 places and 6 shows earning her $890,445. She holds more than all that for me. She was the grand dam on the father’s side of my horse, Swift Counsel. I would like to say that Swift was as good and consistent as his grand dam, but I can’t.

My Horse Swift Counsel

Swift CounselSwift Counsel looked every bit a champion when you looked at him. But in all honesty, he was a $5000 claimer that ran primarily at Louisiana Downs and Oaklawn Park. He loved Coca Cola from the can and wouldn’t touch Pepsi, honestly. In comparison to Shuvee, his grandma, he had 51 starts with 4 wins, 5 places and 5 thirds and earned only $24,349. But he represented a very happy and wonderful time of my life.

Sea Island to Surprise in Shuvee

Summer ApplauseSo much for going down that road. Let’s review the 2013 Shuvee Handicap. The morning line favorite is Authenticity. She is set in at 7/5 odds and is, I believe, very beatable. Don’t get me wrong here. She is a very good mare and believe it or not, is Todd Pletcher’s only horse in the race! (Gasp!) Still she is a very worthy opponent.

Summer Applause is the second choice in the morning line at 5/2. She has had Graded stakes experience where she won the Top Flight Handicap at Aqueduct and won or placed in a couple of other Graded Stakes. I may be wrong but I believe she will come up just short in this 11/8 mile event.

The one I really like is the filly Sea Island. Although she lost by 2 lengths to Summer Applause in the Grade 3 Dupont Distaff at Pimlico, she gets a slight weight break here and the added distance should be to her favor.

So I say it will be Sea Island to win it with Authenticity second and Summer Applause third.

TVG Coaching Club American Oaks

Unlimited Budget to TVG Coaching Club American OaksNext let’s preview the Grade 1 TVG Coaching Club American Oaks for three year-old fillies going a distance of  11/8mile with a purse of $300,000.

This race has a short field of 5 which means if I remember correctly that every horse in this race gets a paycheck. The morning line favorite is Todd Pletcher’s Princess of Sylmar. She of course won the Kentucky Oaks one day before the Kentucky Derby. She upset the field including the other Pletcher charge Unlimited Budget who then ran against the boys in the Belmont Stakes and finished a credible sixth. She is listed in here at 2/1.

Listed 3rd in the morning line is Chad Brown’s My Happy Face at 3/1. She is coming off of a win in the Lotka Stakes at Belmont Park and will be ridden by the esteemed Joel Rosario.

Swift with Mike Lane SrI have to go with one of the Pletcher horses here and that is Unlimited Budget. I believe she will be the post time favorite and will get back to her winning ways. I think Marathon Lady with Robby Albarado up will be second and Princess of Sylmar third.

Good luck to all betting the Shuvee and the Coaching Club Oaks, and I’ll never forget you Swift Counsel.
