Wise Dan Continues Reign as Horse of the Year

Wise Dan 2013 Horse of the Year

Wise DanThe annual Eclipse awards were held Saturday night at Gulfstream Park and as expected, Wise Dan repeated as Horse of the Year. As a matter of fact, the wise one swept the boards in every award he was nominated for including Horse of the Year, Older Male and Male Turf Horse winning each division by a landslide. In the Horse of the Year division, Wise Dan received 208 votes over Mucho Macho Man (21 votes) and Will Take Charge (15 votes). No horse since 1971 (when the Eclipse Awards voting system was put into place) has taken their 3 categories two years in a row like Dan has. There have only been 5 other horses that have won Horse of the Year consecutive years, putting Wise Dan in the company of champions like Curlin, Cigar, Affirmed, Forego and Secretariat. He is also the first gelding since John Henry in 1981 to win Horse of the Year honors. Trainer Charlie LoPresti had this to say about his champion thoroughbred-

“The more you’re around him, the more you realize how special he is. Even in the Shadwell, he tried his heart out on a track that was like running in the Florida Everglades. Even in defeat, he showed up. They just don’t come around that often, horses like him–the soundness of him, the ability. It’s just a dream come true to have a horse like that.”
